The one simple approach that will change how you go after jobs FOREVER (and land more £££ in the process)

Read time: 4 min

Hi Reader

This email may just change your life. So keep reading till the end!

This is how most people think about their job and talk about their experiences in interviews:

a) Their role & seniority

Creative: "I head-up digital creative"

Consultant: "I'm a principal management consultant"

b) Brand experience and key deliverables

Creative: "I oversaw the redesign of Adidas' website"

Consultant: "I project managed the implementation of a new hr system across a multi-million pound global company; from design to integration, change management and delivery. "

c) The outputs/outcomes of the work you did.

Creative: "We delivered a seamless, responsive website without any downtime so sales weren't affected. The new website led to a 2% increase in conversion and a 15% increase in newsletter signups"

Consultant: "The HR system was delivered to time and within budget margins without any impact to day to day operations or complex operations such as payroll. It has gone live in the 10 countries that are trialling it and the blueprint will be used to roll out to the further 20"

Now don't get me wrong.

This information is important.

→ It shows your level of responsibility

→ It shows scale and complexity

→ Big-name brands show credibility

→ It shows successful outcomes.

BUT BUT BUT

It doesn't tell me (or you) the most important thing

The thing that separates you from every other Joe/Jane Bloggs with the same job title and similar experience.

(and there are loads)

It doesn't tell me HOW you achieved those results.

And it is the HOW that will inform

→ the jobs you should go after where you will thrive (that you may not even be aware of)

→ how you sell yourself to land amazing opportunities

Let me give you a real example:

At the end of 2024 I was working with my client Charlie* who is the "Head of Effectiveness" at a very well-known large UK brand.

No, I didn't know what that title meant either 🤷🏽‍♀️

It was a made-up title that made sense internally

but not to the outside world.

→ First problem

His role is complex.

He works across the height of the organisation from the board down to managing associates in his team.

He also worked across the breadth of the organisation - from Marketing to Finance to Store Operations.

His role combined organisational design, project management, change management, customer experience & advisory (to name a few).

The ultimate generalist.

And from every bit of feedback...he was bloody brilliant at what he did.

His reputation preceded him in his organisation

But outside he had no idea how to explain the meaty-ness of his role in a clear, compelling and succinct way.

And how he was so good at it.

Challenging when you are looking for your next career step in a different organisation.

→ Second problem

This meant:

He didn't have clarity on what job roles to go for and why

→ He didn't display the confidence someone with his experience and skills should have

→ He was at risk of leaving tens of thousands on the table and/or missing out on job opportunities.

Which affected his confidence and how he would show up in interviews

→ Third problem

So...this is what we did (whistle-stop tour):

  • We made his job title make sense to the outside world with a simple one-line, jargon-free summary that was added to his CV and LinkedIn page.

  • We outlined his key strengths, skills and experience - the reasons why he can deliver so well in this role across both technical skills and leadership skills.

  • We identified the type of work he was interested in. What he wanted to be known for, the influence he wanted to have, his financial goals that aligned with the life he wants to live and style of working that was important for him to thrive.

  • I inputted all this into ChatGPT with a custom-made prompt to identify possible job roles and relevant (hard) interview questions. Some roles he hadn't even thought of, which expanded the opportunities he thought he had.

  • We used case studies and interview examples as templates to draft HOW responses using a "before/during/after" structure. This meant he communicated his strengths, skills and unique experience in a clear, succinct and compelling way whilst also emphasising the complexity and scale of his role. Things like (not exhaustive):
    1. His approach to negotiation and influence with the board and exec
    2. His approach to ensuring aligned, communication and rapid decision making amongst head of departments.
    3. His approach to effective project management
    4. His approach to making sure his team are aligned, engaged and have clarity on what to do.
    5. His skills in adaptability and versatility to respond when goalposts are changed
    6. plus a whole host more.

And this was the feedback from Charlie 👇🏼

When you articulate the secret sauce behind what you do, you start landing opportunities and commanding the salary you deserve.

Because companies don't just want to know what you did for the companies you have left/are wanting to leave

They want to know how you can replicate that same success for them

They want to know how you can replicate that same success for them

Yep I have written that twice on purpose. Because it's important.

This is a critical element of my think BOLD career design framework.

A framework I designed, to move professionals away from:

✖︎ feeling stuck

✖︎ being fearful of change

✖︎ feeling disconnected from their real selves

to

✔︎ having clarity in their direction

✔︎ feeling confident in who they are and what they have to offer

✔︎ building action and momentum towards where they want to be.

If you want that kind of transformation.

You need to be brave enough to make the first move.

And I'm making it easy for you with my free workshop next week on the 22nd and 23rd - designed to help you get clarity on what's next and move towards a fulfilling career within 3 months.
